With Census data coming think and fast and training budgets (if you have one!) closing at the end of the march, you may be interested in the following SASPAC training dates:
- 12 February – Cardiff, Data Unit – Wales
- 19 February – London, City Hall
- 18 March – London, City Hall
We are also in the process organising additional dates in Scotland, these are likely to be in late February/early March. If you are interested in attending any of these courses, please contact the helpdesk.
The training course will provide users with all the tools they need to search, extract and customise Census data to meet their organisation’s needs. A copy of the training programme can be found here (pdf) and further details on our training pages.
A warm welcome to Stirling Council who have just joined the SASPAC scheme to help them gain maximum value from the 2011 Census results set to be released for Scotland in 2014.
If your organisation would like to learn more about the benefits SASPAC can offer, watch our 2 min video or read some of our users comments. Alternatively, contact the helpdesk for a free trial of the application.
A happy year to all our users!
Before Christmas ONS and NRS produced two Census data releases for England & Wales and Scotland respectively. These new tables have now been integrated into SASPAC and are available as a new software update: v9.85. This release includes:
- access to all Key and Quick Statistics tables for Scotland (Release 2c Key stats & Quick stats layouts (pdf))
- access to 59 new Detailed Characteristic tables for England & Wales (Release 3.5 layouts (pdf))
The application has also been enhanced to include a brand new ‘year’ and ‘country’ filter that allows users to restrict their dataset view to just those of interest. The supporting updated System files are also available to download on our E&W and Scotland data pages.
Given the considerable amount of Census data now available, the SASPAC team have produced Excel files that list all the tables currently available by geography for E&W and Scotland. This should help you stay up to date with the wealth of data now at your finger tips!
What data to expect next?
The next data release planned for E&W is on 23 January and will include 59 Local Characteristic tables for Output Areas (Release 4.4), the current tables layouts are available on the ONS website. In Scotland, the next release phase includes detailed cross tabulations and will be published on a ‘topic’ basis; other than ‘early 2014’ it is not currently clear when this data will be available but we expect to hear more later this month.
One of the most powerful tools in SASPAC is the ability to rezone data for new geographical areas. Users can create census statistics for their own non-standard geographies in the form of system files that can then be interrogated using SASPAC.
The SASPAC team have produced a step-by-step note to guide users through the rezoning process. Also included is a zip file containing all the files necessary to undertake the task. This method uses Census Day postcode estimates to allocate output area populations to user-specified geographies.
