England & Wales – 2011

2011 Census Geography
ONS provide a range of Census geography products to support the census statistical information in published reference tables and datasets. These do not contain any information about the population themselves but describe the geographical areas, and the relationship between them, for which 2011 Census population estimates are produced.

A range of lookup tables, digital boundary files and population centroids relating to both 2001 and 2011 Census are available below.

Lookup products

The ONS website contains 2011 Census Output Area to higher area (both best-fit and exact-fit) lookup files in both text (.txt) and csv file formats. These are provided as national files for England & Wales and include geographies such as wards, parishes, counties and parliamentary constituencies.

To aid Census users colleagues at the Local Government Association (LGA) have created Excel files that join together several of the lookup files (OA/LSOA/MSOA/wards and LAs) and split the national file into local authorities (one worksheet for each LA). These lookups files can be found on the LGA website.

Digital boundaries

The digital boundaries for 2011 output areas, super output areas and workplace zones for England and Wales are available to download from the ONS website. To aid users the SASPAC team have split the original national boundary files into local authorities for England & Wales and made these available in Mapshore (BDY), MapInfo (TAB) and ESRI (SHP) formats. These files are created from the original “full resolution”  and “extent of the realm” boundaries released by ONS – guidance on these formats can be found here and licences here. Both SHP and TAB formats also include summary Census data (usual residents, household residents, Communal Establishment residents, population density, households and average household size) released on 23/11/12.

Population Weighted Centroids

Median population weighted centroids for output areas, super output areas and workplace zones are available to download. The centroid is a summary single reference point which represents how the population at census time was spatially distributed and grouped within that OA, lower layer super output area (LSOA) or middle layer super output area (MSOA).The population weighted centroid files are available in Esri Shapefile format for 2011 output areas, lower super output areas and middle super output areas.
